Notes First British hardcover edition. Previously published in the UK by Sphere Books in 1970 as a paperback. Jacket design Adams/Embry. Lightly sunned to spine, closed tear to upper back panel, linson compressed beneath. Written pseudonymously by Dr H. Richard Hornberger and drawn on his experiences as a field surgeon, the plot depicts an outfit of medical personnel stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, and is notable for its juxtaposition of gory operating room procedures with anti-establishment humour. Filmed by Robert Altman in 1970, with Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Robert Duvall and Sally Kellerman, it won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and it spawned the long-running television series M*A*S*H.
